Ushers

Ushering…A Divine Institution!

The first traces of this God-ordained institution can be found in the early days of the Old Testament. Back then, the Levites were chosen by God to perform specific duties in the sanctuary, in lieu of the first-born (Numbers 3, 5-13). They were responsible for helping the Priest, as well as their Israelite brothers with various tasks (e.g taking care of all the furniture in The Tent of Meeting (Numbers 4: 47), the surveillance of the Tabernacle) …

In short, their role was to make sure that all the rituals related to God’s Praise and Worship ran like a well-oiled machine.

In the new Covenant, the Ushering Ministry is only a continuation of the Old Testament- originated Ministry within the body of Christ.

Our role is to make sure at all times that all aspects of the Sunday service  are up to God’s standards.

Moreover, we are the window of the Church, the very first contact our services attendees have with our Ministry. With this strategic position also comes a very crucial responsibility.

In fact, a warmly welcomed church attendee is more likely to spend quality time in the presence of God during the service. On the contrary, a tensed attendee (due to a poor welcome) will most probably spend an equally tensed and  unproductive time during Church service.

Therefore, we need to fully play our role of “spiritual conditioners” by giving to each precious soul that attends our services the best possible welcome!

Vision: To train Disciplined Disciples!

Our vision is two-folded and part of the greater Vision of ACRA Ministry:

a) To get believers to grasp the holy character of church premises.  The Church should be a place where reverence and deference walk hand in hand in, to the glory of Our God. (Exod 3, 5)

b) To turn the Church into a place where Order and Discipline reign supreme. After all, is our God not a God of order? (1 Cor 14, 33)

 Our Goals

 We pursue 2 main goals:

a) To equip each member of the Ushers team with the knowledge and the competence needed to minister to church attendees in the best possible way.

b) To constantly improve our skills in order to be able to offer a first-class service at various other special events (Weddings, Seminars, Conferences…)

Method of Work: Excellence first and foremost!

Being servants of an Excellent God, we also aspire to put that stamp of Excellence on our Ministry. The Bible warns us: “A curse on him who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!” (Jeremiah 48, 10).Therefore, in our Ministry, we  want to instill a culture of Excellence and of a job very well done.

Listed below is a rough step- by- step modus operandi at a Sunday service:

  1. We start off by gathering for a brief Praise and Worship time (for about 15 minutes), asking the Lord to guide us and empower us to minister to His people. We believe that in so doing we will increase our productivity and efficiency during the service.
  2. We share relevant instructions and information before the service starts(i.e. our positions in the hall during service; how to usher people in; how to control attendees movements during service; where to find items like glasses, tissues, water bottles…)
  3. We centralize and write and censor (if necessary) all the announcements on the day.
  4. We make sure that the service is run smoothly at all times.
  5. We warmly welcome our first-time visitors. A brief and convivial one-to-one chat with them follows up at the end of the service.
  6. We coordinate all the closing-related duties (sweeping the floor, tiding up chairs and musical equipment…)
  7. We take care of any lost item during the service and make sure it is returned back to its owner.
  8. We report any issue to the head-usher or our general overseer.

Looking ahead...

We look forward to:

1. Orgainising team meetings on a regular basis in order

a) To strengthen brotherly bonds and team spirit among us

b) To assess the quality of our services

c) To find ways of increasing efficiency in our services

2. Organising training courses on a regular basis in order to acquire a real mastery of our working methods and so be able to meet the increasing needs of our Church.

3. Organising fellowships with Ushers teams from other churches in order to compare and hopefully improve our working methods.

4. Writing a yearly report in order to better follow the progress and the impact of our Ministry in the Church.

5. Writing and publish an Instruction Manual where all the information related to Ushering duties will be gathered. This didactic piece of work will be used to efficiently train new recruits in our Ministry and to help them master more easily our working methods.

6. Setting up a mini-bookshop/stationery (including Bibles, Christian books, Notebooks, Pens…) in order to make our Sunday services and Church-life in general a pleasant experience for all of us.
